President Bush's Special Relationship with Mexico

Soon after his inauguration in January 2001 President Bush announced that he would concentrate on improving relations between the United States and Latin American countries. He stated that he would especially seek stronger ties between the U.S. and Mexico. September 2001 changed America and the world and Mr. Bush was unable to pursue his stated aims with respect to Latin America and Mexico. President Bush has managed to demonstrate his desire to draw the U.S and Latin America Countries much closer. George Bush has:

  • Kept the U.S. Southern border open in spite of the daily threat of terrorist attacks on American soil.
  • Championed amnesties for Illegal Aliens in the U.S.
  • Proposed the Central America Free Trade Act further integrating America’s economy and culture with those of Mexico and Central America.
  • Sought to increase total legal immigration to the U.S., most of which would come from Latin American countries.
  • Appointed a Mexican-American as the U.S. Attorney General
  • According to The Washington Times, stated in August 2004: “I support raising the (immigration) quotas on certain population groups, like the Mexican Nationals, on who can become a citizen”

President Bush has a great affinity and preference for the Mexican nation and her people. One can only speculate as to the reasons. Having been raised in Texas surely exposed George Bush to a great deal of Mexican and Tex-Mex Culture. His tenure as Texas Governor definitely brought out his love of all things Mexican. He does have several nephews and nieces of Mexican-America heritage as his brother Jeb married a Mexican woman. Whatever the reason George Bush has been a staunch proponent of Latino / Hispanic ascendancy in the United States. Perhaps President Bush has made a political calculation and decided that he must court and curry favor with Hispanics for political expediency or it is simply that he has a great admiration for Latinos and Hispanics.
